BARRY TOWN COUNCIL TO SHOWCASE THE TOWN’S HERITAGE THROUGH EXCITING NEW CENTRE
Barry Town Council has announced that it will move forward with ambitious plans for a vibrant new heritage centre that will bring Barry’s unique story to life for residents and visitors alike.
At a meeting of the Full Council on Monday 19 October, councillors confirmed their commitment to creating a dedicated centre that will shine a spotlight on Barry’s rich history, diverse heritage and proud community spirit. The new attraction is expected to welcome its first visitors during the first half of 2027.
Since 2022, the Town Council has been working towards its vision of creating a place where people can discover the story of Barry, explore its remarkable past and contribute their own memories and experiences. From the historic docklands and Victorian architecture to its maritime legacy, cultural identity and strong community spirit, Barry has a history that continues to shape the town today.
The Council is currently finalising details of the venue that will house the new centre. Once open, it will offer an engaging programme of talks, workshops and community activities, alongside a series of changing exhibitions and displays designed to inspire visitors of all ages.
More information will be announced in the coming months, but the centre is set to become a focal point for residents, visitors and anyone interested in learning more about the story of Wales’ largest town.
Councillor Bronwen Brooks, Leader of Barry Town Council, said:
“I am delighted that Barry Town Council is progressing with plans for this exciting new centre. Barry is the largest town in Wales and has a fascinating story to tell, from its world-famous docks and railways to its coastal character and thriving community life.
“For many years, the Town Council has aspired to create a dedicated space where people can discover more about our town’s past and the people who helped shape it. This centre will provide an engaging and welcoming experience for residents and visitors alike, offering a varied programme of exhibitions, activities and events. I am looking forward to seeing the project come to life and, like everyone else, discovering something new about Barry’s remarkable history.”
From the docks to the railways, from Barry Island to Gavin & Stacey, the new heritage centre will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the stories, people and places that have helped make Barry the vibrant and distinctive town it is today.
