Barry Town Council is delighted to announce that Barry has been successfully re-certified as a Fairtrade Town, recognising the town’s ongoing commitment to promoting fair trade, supporting producers worldwide and encouraging ethical consumer choices.

The re-certification reflects years of dedicated work undertaken through the Council’s Globally Responsible Barry Committee, which continues to promote Fairtrade through community engagement, educational programmes, awareness campaigns and public events. The committee meets regularly and brings together councillors and community members who work collectively to ensure Fairtrade remains a visible and important part of community life in Barry.

Over the past several years, Barry has demonstrated its commitment to Fairtrade through a wide range of initiatives, including Fairtrade Fortnight promotions, coffee mornings, tasting events, quizzes, art competitions, community giveaways and educational activities for families and schools. These initiatives have helped raise awareness of the benefits of Fairtrade, including fair pay for farmers and workers, ethical and sustainable shopping practices and climate-friendly farming methods.

Fairtrade promotion has also featured strongly at community events organised by the Council. Activities such as Fairtrade-themed family learning opportunities and awareness campaigns have helped introduce Fairtrade principles to residents in engaging and accessible ways, particularly for young people and families.

The Council has also continued to support schools, clubs and community organisations through initiatives including the donation of Fairtrade footballs, awareness campaigns and encouraging wider participation in Fairtrade events across the town.

Councillor Ian Johnson, Chair of the Globally Responsible Barry Committee, said:

” We are incredibly proud that Barry has once again achieved Fairtrade Town status.

This re-certification recognises the collective efforts of our residents, schools, businesses, community groups and volunteers who continue to support Fairtrade values.

Together, we are helping to create positive change by encouraging ethical purchasing choices and supporting producers and farmers across the globe.

Fairtrade is about ensuring that producers receive a fair price for their work while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

We are delighted that Barry’s commitment to these principles has once again been recognised through this re-certification.”

The Council would like to thank all local organisations, businesses, volunteers and community members who have contributed to this achievement and who continue to support Fairtrade initiatives throughout Barry.
