The Shop Local Barry Advisory Committee are celebrating their second birthday this week. The Shop Local Group first met on 3 October 2016 and has since grown to an interactive and extremely productive network of likeminded individuals who all share the same common goal of promoting shopping locally in Barry.
The group has been supported by Barry Town Council who provide a meeting space, an Officer who helps progress their ideas and a budget of £50,000 which was approved by Full Council on Monday, 19 December 2016.

Since then, the Shop Local Group have used the budget to support events such as the High Street Summer Fete (2016-2018), the Holton Road Christmas Market 2017, Party on the Square 2017 and most recently, Pumpkins in the Park which will be held on Saturday, 27 October 2018 at Central Park, Barry.

The group have supported and instigated many projects such as Kevin Moore’s – “A Year in Barry” project, the flowers installed at Holton Road were courtesy of Shop Local, numerous roundabout signs throughout Barry display the Shop Local logo and soon maps promoting the key shopping areas in Barry will be launched, as well as an exciting “Walk to your local shops” campaign which the group are currently working on.

The group were recognised nationally when Barry Town Council received the “Local Service of the Year Award” at the One Voice Wales National Conference which also saw the Community Development Officer deliver a best practice presentation regarding the campaign.

Chair of Shop Local, Councillor Sandra Perkes says “Barry Town Council are very pleased to be working in partnership with local traders throughout Barry to ensure the provision of shops and services are maintained and the message of “shop local” is promoted. Due to the current concern regarding Holton Road, the Shop Local Group are working hard to ensure both Traders and the public’s voice are heard.”

The group have been extremely busy since its inception two years ago and continue to meet to discuss ways in which the message of “Shop Locally” can be promoted.

The group will next meet on Thursday, 22 November 2018 at 6 pm in the Council Chamber, 7 Gladstone Road, Barry. New members are always welcome.
