Barry Town Mayor, Councillor N Hodges and Vale of Glamorgan Mayor Councillor Charles opening the gardens

CEMETERY Approach Gardens have been officially opened by representatives of Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council following work funded jointly by the pair.

Phase one of the project has seen the area transformed into an accessible open space for the community to enjoy by introducing new landscaping, fencing, seating, planting and paving.

Since 2015, the Town and County Councils have been working in partnership to improve the previously derelict site, with an initial sum of £550,000 invested into the scheme.

The public were consulted on what the new area should be called and Cemetary Approach Gardens emerged as the preferred choice.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council will transfer the land to Barry Town Council in the form of a long-term lease.

Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery already has Green Flag status, the mark of a top-quality outdoor space, and it is hoped the gardens can achieve a similar accolade in the future.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Leader of Barry Town Council said: “I am delighted that by working in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council we have developed this exciting scheme, which will bring a neglected site back into use for the residents of Barry. I look forward to seeing people using these gardens and community open space in a much loved area of Barry and also the gateway to Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery.”

Cllr John Thomas, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “By working together the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Barry Town Council have been able to transform a previously dilapidated area of land into an attractive outdoor space we hope the whole community can enjoy. We are committed to developing green spaces within the Vale and currently boast seven parks with Green-Flag Status.”
