COVID-19 Barry Town Council Measures

Service Update – Monday 23rd March 2020

Due to the ongoing outbreak of Covid-19 and recent guidance received from Government, Barry Town Council has taken the difficult decision to close Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery to the public.

Funerals will still take place under controlled conditions and the Cemetery Team is working hard to maintain capacity within the burial service during this unprecedented period.

The decision to temporarily close Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery has not been taken lightly. These are unprecedented times and as such, unprecedented and difficult measures are required, based on Government advice and guidance. As a Town Council, we are playing our part in reducing the spread of the pandemic throughout our town; the Vale of Glamorgan Council has too closed many of its public spaces.

The right thing for us to do now is to act to protect each other, our staff, our customers and the people and communities we live and work in.

Further to the Prime Minister's statement on Monday 23 March, there is now restricted movement of the public and only a small number of valid reasons why people can leave their homes. People are required to stay at home and to reduce social contact, and for the vulnerable in our communities this is even more important and this should not be trivialised.

This is a pandemic and a significant crisis; changes in behaviour will be the only way that we can reduce the exposure, spread and effect of Covid 19 in our communities.

We fully recognise the upset this will cause for those who wish to remember their loved ones at the Cemetery, but we hope that you can understand the Council's position and reasons for making this difficult decision to protect the wellbeing of the community we serve as instructed by the Government.

Further updates will be made on the Barry Town Council website and Facebook pages and the Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery Facebook and Twitter page.

For help and support during this period, the Good Grief Trust has set up a new page on their website to bring you updates on the crisis and signpost you to the charities, support services and helplines that offer dedicated advice and information here -
