Out & About - Cardiff and Penarth

Cardiff, Europe’s newest capital city, has a great deal to interest all visitors. In its very centre, next to the main shopping area, is the splendid Cardiff Castle, whilst at the northern edge of the city is Castell Coch (The Red Castle) - both are well worth seeing and are open daily. The sights include the National Museum of Wales, Llandaff Cathedral, the historic St John’s church, the new Millennium Stadium, St David’s Hall, the New Theatre, Cardiff International Arena and the rapidly developing Cardiff Barry area with the National Assembly for Wales and the Wales Millennium Centre for performing arts.

Finally, you can enjoy a seasonal sea trip in the Bristol Channel on the Waverley paddle steamer or the Balmoral cruise ship which sail from Penarth Pier in the spring and summer. Whole day or just afternon and evening trips take those on board to Somerset and Devon, as well as to the islands of Lundy, Flat Holm and Steep Holm. There are a variety of trips available, including excursions to Minehead to see the West Somerset steam railway, as well as cruises up the River Severn and along the Avon through the dramatic Clifton Gorge and into Bristol.
