Beaches

Barry’s beaches are some of the town’s most glorious natural assets, all enjoying southern (and therefore often very sunny) aspects. Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, is the most popular of them all, a superb stretch of fine sand with grassy banks behind. There is a large and active fairground close by plus attractions such as the promenade and the pony-cart rides. In the summer, Barry Island Railway Company runs its heritage trains between the Island and the Waterfront. Jackson’s Bay offers a more secluded area for bathing. To the west of Barry Island is a long pebble beach, backed by a spacious car park terrace. Further west, beyond Bullnose Cliff, is Porthkerry Beach.

As would be expected in a seaside town, swimming is popular, both at the indoor pools at the town centre leisure centre and at the various sandy or pebble beaches, which afford ideal conditions for sea bathing.

Sea fishing can be enjoyed along the coast in and around Barry; yachting is another popular sport. Barry Yacht Club has its headquarters in Barry Harbour, and races are held for various classes.
