Local Events - Autumn/Winter

The 5th of November (regardless of which day of the week the 5th falls on) is always celebrated with a bonfire and superb fireworks display at Friar’s Point on Barry Island organised and managed by volunteers from Barry Rotary Club. Music in the Vale is an annual musical competition of 20 years standing for young instrumentalists and singers. It is held in November, usually at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, Colcot Rd. An increasingly popular ceremonial event is Remembrance Day Sunday, the focus for which is the newly refurbished Cenotaph in front of the Memorial Hall.

There are moves afoot to host the first Beer Festival to take place in Barry since 1973, when one of the first such festivals ever to be held in Wales took place in the Windsor Hotel and Public House, following the formation of the Campaign for Real Ale in the UK that year.

At the beginning of December (or sometimes slightly earlier), the local trade associations for Holton Road and Broad Street/High Street hold colourful switching-on ceremonies, which are attended by residents and visitors alike, who take advantage of the late opening times of many shops.
